Acture: A New Angle on Posture

With Elizabeth Beringer

11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Moshe Feldenkrais disliked the word posture as it comes from the same root as post. Instead he proposed the word acture to capture the importance of how we move. In thisone day course, we will use the concept of acture to expand and inform how we conceive of posture. Participants will work in a wide variety of positions and situations related to expanding movement options. The course will be of particular interest to those practicing dynamic sports; however , the ideas will be of real relevance to anyone who sits, stands or walks, meaning most everyone!

Elizabeth Beringer has been involved with the practice and development of the Feldenkrais Method for more than 30 years and is one of the foremost Feldenkrais teachers and trainers. She studied directly with Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais in both the US and Israel beginning in 1976.  Elizabeth maintains varied private practice and is known for her ability to apply the Method in dynamic situations. She practices aikido and currently holds the rank of 6th-degree black belt. In 2007, she founded the Feldenkrais Institute of San Diego, where she conducts professional trainings, public workshops and her private practice. www.feldenkraisresources.com.

Upcoming Dates

March 3

“A Feldenkrais Perspective on Yoga,”

with Donna Wood

Please join us for a one-day seminar which will employ aspects of both asana and ATM in order to improve our practice of each of the systems. We will explore the depth and richness of these systems and how each complements the other. The lessons will be fun and full of challenges.

April 1

“Walking With Ease,”

with Martin Mosimann from Switzerland

Watch a child walk and run – how wonderful light and playful this is! Many adults forget the ease and joyfulness of walking, walking mainly from their legs and not with their entire body. In this workshop we will work from the feet to the head, to integrate the whole body for pleasant, powerful and upright walking.

May 12
“Invigorate Your Spine, Invigorate Yourself,”

with Elizabeth Beringer

We will take pleasure in many of the myriad ways we can move our spine and trunk. For many people daily life asks for a greatly reduced range of our movement and expressive abilities. In this course we will spread out in unusual positions and combinations of movement planes to expand core flexibility, animate the self-image and simply have fun moving in some new ways.

June 2

“Functional Fitness the Feldenkrais Way,”

with Donna Ray

Fitness The Feldenkrais Way is for anyone who wants to move well and feel fantastic. Awareness Through Movement lessons are designed to stimulate brain/mind functioning as well as physical strength and coordination. Slow, easy movements will lead to complex active movements. You will be surprised at what you are able to do!
