Public Workshops

Our one-day Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) workshops for the public are open to both health professionals and the general public. The seminars are appropriate for both beginning and more experienced students. Each workshop will focus on a different facet of the Feldenkrais Method® and can be taken as
a series or individually. These workshops also serve as an excellent prelude to our Feldenkrais Professional Training Programs.

We hold workshops in San Diego and Berkeley CA, and on the East Coast.

In Berkeley, and San Diego, you may sign up for each workshop individually or register for any combination in each area. Discounted rates are offered for multiple workshop registration. An additional $10 fee per workshop is applied for attendance without preregistration. Visa, MasterCard, American Express and personal checks are accepted.

Refunds will be given (less a $10 administrative fee) only if cancellation occurs more than two weeks prior to the workshop. To receive a brochure, to register for the workshops or for more information and a FREE NEW CATALOG of educational materials, please contact us.

Finding Center and Ground

With Ralph Strauch

September 19, 2010

11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The felt experience of support from the ground contributes to your sense of yourself as a competent physical being, comfortable with your place in the world around you. The experience of center does also. Yet they can easily get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and often do. This workshop will explore the somatic nature of both experiences and their roles in your larger life experience.

We will use Feldenkrais ATM lessons and related experiential tools to amplify and deepen the experience of both ground and center, and to explore their effects on other aspects of your life experience.

Feeling support from the ground involves balancing your body weight on your skeleton with a minimum of extraneous muscular effort. The most basic form of support there is, it plays a significant role in how you experience the presence or absence of other forms of support -- emotional, financial, etc. You may respond to a lack of one of these forms of support by sub-consciously ungrounding yourself, thus amplifying feelings of anxiety and insecurity. Understanding this process can make it possible to reverse it, giving yourself a greater sense of competence and capability in all kinds of difficult circumstances.

The experience of center involves the felt sense of your pelvis and lower

belly--the area the Chinese refer to as your Tan T’ien and the Japanese as your Hara. Your basic sense of self lives here, in an important sense that we will explore in the workshop. Being in touch with that center enhances the feeling of balance and stability in the world, making it easier to deal with the challenges that life gives you.

Ralph Strauch has a Feldenkrais practice in Pacific Palisades, California. Trained by Moshe Feldenkrais, he was formerly a mathematician specializing in human and organizational decision-making. His work is informed by strong interests in perception and more than three decades exploring the nature of somatic experience. He is the author of The Reality Illusion and Low-Stress Computing, and numerous articles related to awareness and the nature of being human. For more information about Ralph’s teaching and his other books and recordings, please visit the Somatic Options website at www.somatic.com

Arlyn's next public workshop will be in Spring 2011. The date is to be determined.

Improving the Use of the Arms

With Arlyn Zones, M.A.

Spring 2011. Date TBD.

11 a.m. to 5 p.m..

In early infancy, a child’s use of the arms is clearly related to the movement of the pelvis and the spine. Over the years, the limbs become isolated from this source of proximal power. The more the limbs try to do the work meant for the big muscles in the center of the body, the more discomfort appears in the shoulders and in the wrists.

In four Awareness Through Movement® lessons, we will explore ways in which we can improve the use of the arms and find much more comfort in our shoulders and hands—an improvement that will generalize to a feeling of

well-being throughout the entire self.

“Smart Solutions”

With Stacy Barrows

October 24, 2010

11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Through the influence of the Feldenkrais Method®, this course will introduce the use of new kinesthetic tools designed to heighten sensory-motor learning.

The SMARTROLLER®, LINKS and SMART SITS products were developed from high-density foam to help people improve one’s sensitivity to movement while finding better skeletal support. The emerging research on body awareness and neuroscience helps point us in the direction to find ways to improve this aspect towards true wellness.

Using movement-based puzzles with these SMART products, we will explore ways to improve body awareness, balance and refine movement.

In the one-day workshop, participants will:

  • Explore the Feldenkrais Method and have an understanding of this form of somatic education.
  • Find new ways to explore sensory-motor learning using short puzzles with props to discover improved body awareness.
  • Derive new strategies that help work with populations like Pilate’s instructors, yoga and massage therapists, athletes, and therapists (PT/OT’s).
  • Increase skills for finding optimal alignment, balance and coordination.
  • Create ways to use hands on skills to heighten movement intelligence and improved motor learning.
  • Observe chronic patterns of movement that may interfere with learning and become aware of ways to help people find their own guidance system through using movement.

Stacy Barrows, PT, GCFP, is a Physical Therapist, PMA Pilates certified instructor and Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner?. She co-owns a private practice in Century City, California (Century City PT). Stacy has an extensive background with the foam rollers in the clinical setting, with sport enhancement and youth education and has taught internationally to health and fitness professionals about their benefits and practical applications. Stacy is the inventor of the SMARTROLLER®, a foam roller product that she developed that not only allows more people to benefit from using foam rollers but also assists in motor learning by drawing on the latest neuroscience research. She has written articles on the foam roller for sport and therapeutic magazines and she has coauthored research on the Feldenkrais Method. Stacy is writing book on sensory-motor learning using the Smartroller. Throughout her career, Barrows’ passion has been to bridge the gap between the fitness and wellness communities and to make movement awareness and improvement an everyday part of people’s lives.
